Blast-off Math was born in 2008 when Peggy Chinoski began looking for quality, affordable
academic enrichment camps for her sons in the Metro Detroit area, similar to the camps
she ran while working for Grand Valley State University. Quality camps exceeded her
summer budget, so she decided to create them. She developed a unique curriculum,
aligned with the state of Michigan Curriculum Framework, that encouraged children to
have fun playing math based games and learning to speak the language of math.
Peggy has a BA in mathematics from Saint Mary’s College, a M. Ed in Curriculum and
Instruction in Math education from Grand Valley State University, and graduate course
work from the University of Chicago and Michigan State University. She has been a
high school Math teacher, a program director at the Regional Math and Science Center
at GVSU, as well as a Mathematics and Math Education instructor at GVSU and Michigan
State University.
